FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Lafarge Kamloops Plant has received several questions and comments from the community about the Permit Amendment Project at a public open house, through Community Liaison Committee (CLC) meetings and in emails and letters of concern from our neighbours. For a full list of responses, click here.

Here are just a few examples:

Will there be plume modelling for the baghouses and the kiln?
Lafarge has commissioned Dillon Consulting to complete Air Dispersion Modelling on new emission points—Gypsum Granulator System and Pozzolan/Pumice Dryer. Modelling will also include existing emission points under our operating permit.
Are there any updates on Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) of pumice and gypsum dust?
Lafarge is waiting for the results from the Air Dispersion Modeling. Exceedances in the dispersion model, if found, will be investigated through a Screening Level Health Risk Assessment.
How will you address concerns about spillage from trucks on roads and the bridge?
Mark Wilson, Lafarge Kamloops Site Superintendent, has contacted trucking operators and communicated plant policies and expectations. Spillage from trucks is not tolerated; any spills will be cleaned up as soon as they are identified. All three bulk powder load-out points in the facility were upgraded in 2018 to reduce instances of material spillage from trucks. Additionally, the truck wash onsite is in operation outside of winter months.
Can you speak to transparency and consultation efforts?
This permitting process has been a learning lesson for the plant. We understand the extent of the concerns and are working diligently to gain the community’s trust. As we follow the process laid out by the Ministry of Environment, we will continue to hold future information sessions and meet with the CLC. Information will also be posted on the Kamloops website.
How will you be monitoring noise from the new machinery?
A noise meter has been purchased. Readings will be taken at the nearest residences when the Gypsum Granulator System and Pozzolan/Pumice Dryer equipment are installed.
Are broken bag detectors functional?
Broken bag detectors will be installed at the Gypsum Granulator System and the Pozzolan/Pumice Dryer. The detectors will be maintained to ensure they are in working order.
What are you going to do to become a better neighbor?
Lafarge Kamloops Plant has been around since 1970. Our employees are all members of the community who take pride in what they do and share our vision. We are working toward continuous improvement and building more trusting relationships. We are hoping actions developed out of the CLC will support that. We also hope new products will be a significant economic driver; growing opportunities for everyone.
